When our dishwasher broke a few years back, my youngest begged me not to fix it.  She said she enjoyed all of us doing dishes together.

Today I used Mrs. Meyers biodegradable dish soap, less than a quarter sized drop, in my stainless steel bowl.  I used another bowl on the left to catch rinse water.

When I finished, I poured the wash water into the bucket, then the rinse water in the wash bowl.  Swished that around and poured it into my bucket.  The bucket measures three gallons precisely at the top.

The website about Mrs. Meyers biodegradable dish soap is:

Staff note (Nikki Roche) :

I'm leaving this as an edge case. After looking at the link, Mrs Meyer's soap is biodegradable but doesn't fit this BB's requirement for "greywater friendly or readily biodegradable." An internet search showed there is a difference between biodegradable and readily biodegradable, and sodium laurel sulfate isn't generally considered to be greywater safe.

I am brand new here, so please forgive me any formatting issues. I do not have a full-size-dishwasher so I am not sure how much would fit in one (they are not as ubiquitous here in AUST, but still fairly common), but I have let my dishes accumulate over two day’s to make sure to have enough.

This is the pile of dishes, pre-wash. My husband prefers to use shop brought dish detergent, but for this load I used my handmade (0-superfat) soap shaved into the water.

First of all, welcome to Permies! Thanks for attempting some PEP BBs.

It looks like you've done most of what is required for this BB, but not all.

I think you need to do a little more to accomplish these two points:
- post a picture of the completed dishes with obviously less than 3 gallons water used
- describe the soap used, its grey water friendliness, and a link to the verifiable biodegradeable dish soap

If you can show us these two meet the bill, then I, or another certifier, can approve it.

This particular BB trips a lot of people up. But since dishes always need to be washed, I'm sure you'll have more chances to finish this if you don't have the pictures this time around.

Ok! The finished pic shows my sink with the water still in it, it’s a pretty standard Australian shallow sink, filled to 1/3 volume. That would be approximately 5 litres. 5L is about 1.3 US Gal.
As for my soap, I used my domestic cleaner soap. I’ll attach my recipe as an image. This soap is made from home rendered beef tallow. I collect it from beef cuts I cook up for my Second Son and my Husband as neither like to eat the top-fat. It will be a much faster collection from here out as our local butcher is adding a higher fat content to his mince mix nowadays and we are finding it too oily without pouring off!
Hope this meets the requirements.

This Soap Calculator is cool. Am I reading it correctly in that the only ingredients are tallow, lye, and water?

For this particular soap, yes! Takes me a few hours to render down the fat to a clean tallow, I then filter it through paper coffee filters to get any last bits that setting and scraping has not removed. Then it’s beautiful and clean and pure for use in the soap!
I also make our soap for bathroom use, my First Son has sensitive skin and many of the softeners and fragrances used in commercial soap irritates his skin. Making soap for a week or two once a year usually gives me enough for 12-16 months depending on how mad I get about it HAHA

Per the requirements.

"- fill a dishwasher with clean dishes using less than 3 gallons of water

              - might require five rounds in a small dish rack "

Also you're missing the clean dishes picture for this round. You will need to meet the requirements for each round of dishes. Please be careful of the listed requirements.

I'm not a fan of doing dishes, but having the set-up outside makes it a lot more enjoyable :-)

Warmed the water on the woodstove, used a cotton cloth for washing.
For rinsing, I had some warm water in a glass bowl in which I dipped the smaller items. For the bigger items, I simply splashed some clean water over them.

The dishwashing soap I made myself. These are the used ingredients:

  • water
  • sodium bicarbonate
  • 100% biodegradable soap flakes of the brand 'blan' (I don't think they make them anymore?? I could only find a picture of the box it used to be in and added it below)
  • lemon peel
  • rosemary
  • essential oil of lemon
  • essential oil of tea tree

  • I'm still experimenting to perfect the soap, it feels a bit too greasy, but it does the trick beautifully, so I might just have to give myself more time to get used to it!

I use liquid Castile soap that I buy in bulk (as in bring your own recipient). There's no link to this specific product, but here's an article about Castile soap: Is Castile soap biodegradable

I think you submitted this one to the wrong badge bit! This one is for

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
     - wash dishes without a dishwasher
         - use minimal soap
             - must be greywater friendly soap (the soap usually says "greywater safe" or "readily biodegradable")
         - fill a dishwasher with clean dishes using less than 3 gallons of water
             - or approximate equivalent
                 - might require five rounds in a small dish rack
             - yes, you are using the dishwasher as a dish drying rack

This is from washing dishes while camping and it includes all the dishes and cooking implements for one day for two people. We used a 2-bin wash and rinse system so there were about 1.5 gallons in each bin for 3 gallons total. The soap used is Campsuds. We've had it a while and the packaging has changed, but here is a link: https://www.rei.com/product/407166/campsuds-biodegradable-concentrated-soap-2-oz.

We camped for two days and did two rounds of dishes like this. I'm adding a picture of the second day of dishwashing to meet the volume requirements.

Thank you to the BB reviewers for your time and feedback!

Note: Looks like you've got the technique and cleaner right. The BB states you need to wash enough dishes to fill a dishwasher so I think you need to wash a few more before you qualify.
