I think cookies and cake would be good ones to bake in the rocket oven

I'd love to do this with some safety instruction from someone experienced!

Kyle, WL had a timber tool which increases safety and might be recommended or required for felling there.

I need to prep 10 junkpoles and do 50 square feet of chop and drop, then I'll get my sand badges in Woodland Care and Gardening.

I want to focus on woodworking while I'm there. For roundwood:
three log bench
dry peg in green wood project (build one):
add one horizontal log to berm/hugelkultur scaffolding

Doing the berm scaffolding seems like it'll be tough because it requires setting up the scaffolding before I can add a log to it. It would be good to work on it with someone else, since multiple folks can get their BB since it requires adding a single log.

As for dimensional lumber, I haven't accomplished any BBs, and I think there's enough scrap wood at WL to at least make a wood burned sign (that fits the size requirement this time).

I can also knock out some tool care BBs since they have more tools to take care of. I need to sharpen a chainsaw, plus there's a bunch of bikes to work on.

Overall the only BBs I'm certain I'll do are the remaining BBs for Woodland Care and Gardening, plus some woodworking. Other than that I'll see how I'm feeling when I'm there.

After reviewing the thread, looks like Kyle and Ashley also want to do the berm scaffolding for Roundwood. We should all work together on it!

It wouldn't hurt to put up a few berm scaffold vertical logs.  Some for this event and some for the summer.  Maybe the tree cutting BB trees could be used for these verticals...

I'd be up for helping get them in place (with the tractor if possible) since it will just make things go easier this summer.

It sounds like we currently have seven people attending.

Hey Mike, I am thinking that we should cap it at 12 - what are your thoughts?

So I filled out the questionnaire...should I wait for someone to reach out to discuss getting picked up from the airport and getting accomodation there, or is there someone I can contact?

Hi Ashley, I'm interested in chatting about accommodation options and airport rides as well.  (When I filled out the form, I was probably assuming that I would drive.  Upon further thought, I decided to fly.)

So my husband wants to come with me for the BB20.

He would like to come in order to take video for Paul's YouTube Channel.
He would also be happy to spend a day putting up firewood for the lab or helping contribute to the lab in another way.
I can also get him BB20 certified for the event if needed, but I think he mostly wants focus on video and hang out with Permies :)

Congratulations and quick work!
Just so you know, each point in Oddball counts as one BB on you way to badges.  In fact you already qualify for BB5. Post here

Great, thanks for the link. Yes this is fun! I will probably skip this and go for the BB10 later today. I have a few projects planned and I think I'm only 3 points away!

So I've refined my BB list for the event in order to be PEP 1 certified by the end of the week:

Woodland care:
peel 2 live trees and put up off the ground to dry
prep 10 junkpoles
cleave 6 shakes with a froe
repair 24 feet of junkpole fence

Rocket:
start and operate a j-tube rocket mass heater for 1 hour
start and operate a batch box rocket mass heater for 1 hour
start a rocket oven and bake something
use a rocket j-tube to boil a gallon of water
do the annual ash cleanout of a rocket mass heater
spread some ash on a garden spot (just a dusting)

Food Prep:

cook at least two cups grain (or pseudograin) in four different ways
  - solar oven
  - rocket stove and haybox cooker
dry food in a solar food dehydrator

Tool Care:
- Wedge Style Handle

If time permits I would like to work on metal working, earthworks, and willow BBs

An alternative is to focus on roundwood

club style mallet
compound mallet (smaller dry stick goes into bigger green stick (head))
two coat hooks made from small trees and the hooks are the branches on these trees
add one horizontal log to berm/hugelkultur scaffolding
three log bench
dry peg in green wood project (build one):
  - coat hooks (4)
  - half log bench (six feet long) on four legs
  - saw horse
  - saw buck
  - stool

Meaning they are en route to Wheaton Labs where we'll sign them.  Then they will be shipped to the US peeps.

For the BB20 event, I'd like to contribute to the food pile/bring some food.  What are your recommendations to best do this? (I'm flying in to Missoula, and I'm planning to get a ride from the airport to WL)  Pack food in my suitcases/check a cooler?  Have the airport shuttle driver stop at an organic grocery store in Missoula on the way from the airport to WL?  Wait to arrive at WL and contribute cash to whomever is responsible for sourcing most of the food pile and/or ordering it to be delivered (are there grocery delivery services that will deliver to WL)?

Benton,

Thanks for offering.  I'll be driving to WL myself but I can give you some suggestions.  It is usually a Boot or another volunteer that picks up people at the airport and if you let them know you would like to go to the Good Food Store or Natural Grocers, that can often be arranged.

I don't think it is necessary for you to bring food on the plane unless you grow/raise something that you want to share (and is organic or better).

From previous events, I remember specialty items being particularly appreciated - things that are not usually stocked.  There are/will be vegans/vegetarians/carnivores/omnivores/locavores.

Looking forward to seeing you and everyone next week!

I plan on bringing some "treats" for the Boots & everyone (coffee and dark chocolate) so you can exclude that from the list. I planned to also bring some items from the organic store in Eureka on my way done.

I'm going to say I will grab some:
- Rice
- Eggs
- Greens

How does that sounds?
