This is a badge bit is not part of the Natural Medicine badge any more.  You can complete it if you want but it won't count towards your badge.

For this badge bit, you will create a journal that you will continue to add your natural medicine knowledge to. This will be a place for you to refer to and to document information you have gleaned.

Requirements: It must be a system that you can add more content to as your experience with Natural Medicine increases and be easily referencable when you need to look stuff up.

These are the journal options we've come up with so far:
Option 1: Get a binder or some other sort of journal-thing that you can add pages to. Get 7 sheets of paper (preferably with tabs or someway to easily locate them). Label your dividers with the following sections.
Option 2: Get a notebook and create a flexible index system like a Bullet Journal.  Make certain it is easy to look up the information in the future.
Option 3: Create an electronic system that allows for more information to be added and searched (maybe it can be something that can be taken out into the field.)
Option 4: Create a box or file cabinet with folders for the information

Label the sections (These can be as pretty or boring as you like):
 - Herbs
 - Infusions
 - Teas
 - Salves
 - Syrups
 - Poultices
 - Tinctures
 - Decoction

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must post:
 - photo of your indexing system (dividers, index)
 - photo of your open journal

I would like to do this...

...but...

I do not do well with systems where I shuffle/add pages to it.  (I would also have to buy stuff - since I don't do well with these systems, I don't buy them.  It would be better if I could work with what I already have)

I want to do a bullet Journal (BuJo) system.

What if we changed this to be: set up a journal that is easily referenced.  It could be a system with dividers or an indexing system like a bujo

I think as long as the system is organized, and you can show pictures of how it's organized and that it exists, and is able to be added to, that should be fine!

The question is, how would we describe this in the requirements?

It definitely has to be a system that is useful for looking up stuff later.

I have it on the computer, but also print it out occasionally as I update it a lot. My is organized by useful herbs for body systems though, not by the method of making medicine. On the computer I simply have documents for each ailment or group of ailments.

I use a recipe app for cooking. I thought it would work well for the natural medicine journal. I like the fact that I can add pictures of the herb I’m harvesting and I can add tag words that are searchable for later reference. The apps name is “OrganizEat.” It’s free for the first 200 recipes I believe. Pay no attention to the top row of categories. Those are stock on the app.

I want this journal to be useful to me as I learn to incorporate the herbs I grow in my garden as medicine to heal my family. The index includes Herbs, with alphabetized sections for different herbs; How to make, which includes the list of different preparation methods; Illnesses, for quick references on what herbs and methods work for that illness; Planting guide, my reference for where the herb was planted in my garden and how it survived; and finally Resources, where did I get the seeds, plants and extras to make the medicine.

My main reference for natural medicines is a book from a trusted herbalist.  Much of what I need is already in that book.  Would it work to just come up with a way to add to the book with additional information?  Like taping or stapling notes onto specific pages?

That's a hard question to answer. A big reason that our herbalists here on permies wanted a journal, was for the learning process of processing the info yourself. If we just copy it or refer to it, we're not learning nearly as much as if we write it down and process it.

The main reason Paul wanted it was so that people could record observations on their own land of how the herbs could be used. It would be a resource to show to Otis that you do know this stuff enough to have formed your own reference journal. Having a book in your  possession doesn't show Otis that you know the stuff. Having your own journal that's organized with all your notes and recipes, does.

Honestly, I'd (Paul might say differently!) lean against just using a book you purchased and adding more pages.  But, you can totally use that information to make your own pages.

Think of it like back in school. Teachers didn't let us get away with just referencing a book full of info--they wanted their essay to show you actually read it and are able to process the info. I'm thinking you could write the bare minimum on your pages and put page numbers for reference to the book you like.

I have many herbal books sitting on the shelf gathering dust because they covered such a wide range of herbs, I was overwhelmed.  Creating the journal specific to herbs I am growing on our property has helped to focus my efforts. In the process, I have taken the books off the shelf and cut them up to put together my journal. The knowledge was always there but I have taken ownership. I also realized as I tried to find  information that some herbal books were combining so many herbs into complex formulas that were beyond my current ability.  These books have been put back on the shelf so I am not distracted from the baby steps of learning how to use the herbs I can grow as medicine. As I attempt more infusions, salves and tinctures I will be able to record the results and move beyond the cut and paste of basic information. The journal will become mine.

Ok, I started my journal.  I didn't have a paper journal laying around that would work for this so I went with a computerized version.  It's in Open Office (free MS Word knock off).  Much like my other computer documents, I just use different size text for the headings and scroll around alphabetically to find what I'm after.  If I could figure out how to do hyperlinks within the document it would be even better.  I doubt it will get much longer than 10 pages and I can easily handle that with my normal organizational strategies.

First picture is of the start of the document with the index or table of contents.  Some day these might hyperlink to the section below.  Right below it the "Herbs A-Z" section begins.

Second picture is of the Infusion and Salve sections.

Philosophically, I'm going to put a basic salve recipe in the Salve section.  A complicated, multi ingredient salve would go in there too.  A specific salve for a special herb would go in that herb's section.  If I change my mind, it's easy to cut/paste them to another place in the document.

I hope everyone is having a good day!

I have a problem with the Natural Medicine Journal requirement of having 2 seperate sections on the same brew, that of TEAS, and INFUSIONS, as they are the same thing. So either I'm leaving teas out or someone needs to explain to me why the redundancy. A third term for the same thing is TISANE but that has not been included as a section. True TEA is Camellia sinensis, as I'm sure you all know. Anything else is an infusion of the herb(s) into a drink we commonly call tea.

Please help me understand. Thanks in Advance!

Otherwise I am beginning a new notebook on this subject just for the badge. I have one on the all natural herbal ointment I make and the properties of the ingredients that is all hand written (done before I had a computer!). If that could be used in part for this, I'd be quite happy!! If I can locate it. hahaha

I helped in forming the badge, but I acted as more of a facilitator than an expert (of which I am not). I used the terms that those more experienced in herbal medicine gave me.

And, looking at the badge page https://permies.com/wiki/108662/PEP-Badge-Natural-Medicine, there actually isn't any badge bits currently for tea, and so we might not even need that listed. You could name the section "tisane," if you'd like, too.

Infusions appear to be anything steeped for a long time in either oil, water, or vinegar. Teas are steeped generally for a short time. Decoction, I believe, is generally for roots. But, like I said, I'm no expert.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me will chime in.

I created my Natural Medicine Journal in OneNote. Mostly I will be using it on my PC, but if I need to I can access it from my phone or laptop.

I just got an apothecary book for my birthday too, so I'm really looking forward to adding to my journal :)

My journal is simply a Google doc, which is how I organize most of my documents. I made it available offline so I can use/update it in the field, and it is searchable through the “find” function.

I have an existing herbal but I organize it differently. I keep base recipes for different preparation types and then alphabetize the herbs. Is this okay or do I need to reorganize for the BB?

Hello, I have begun my journal, with the first entry, Peppermint.  You can find The Natural Medicine Musings of an Industrious Hummingbat as a google doc.

Here is the cover:

And here are some examples of the separators:

Here is a screenshot of the open journal with the table of contents laid out.  It's searchable, indexable, can hold hyperlinks and images, and can be edited offline.  It can be exported to PDF at any time for printing.  It will never get lost.  I certainly do love a good hand bound book, since I bind them myself. I made a book press and everything.  But for information reference a cloud-based document wins every time IMO.

Maybe one day I'll print this and bind it!

I have notes on herbs and herbal remedies scattered everywhere. This BB has inspired me to do something that's been on my mind; make a notebook for this information, but focusing specifically on herbs I either grow or forage here on our homestead. Here's how I organized it.

3-ring binder works best for me.

First page is a handout I received about herbs, collecting, and preparing.

Then a rough map of our homestead.

Herbs in the herb section with important points and a map where it's growing.

Sections on preparations start with general instructions and then recipes.

It will be a work in progress for quite a while, I suspect, but at least I've made a start!

Being honest, this version is probably temporary until I can sit down at length and draw up some higher quality visuals. Still, it does the job it needs to until then.

This will be a good one for me to start doing BBs in this PEP-part. I like starting journals or binders or even spreadsheets (like Excel). I see I can get this BB just by doing that (starting it), no need to really go on and on ... (I'm not good at that).
I looked up this PEP Natural Medicine because I searched for the recipe of Fire Cider. I made it once a year or two ago and I thought now was the right time to make it again. So I can (probably) do those two BBs both, this week.

I repurposed a binder and tabbed dividers that I used to organize my homework in college. I'll draw something to put on the cover and spine later, but for now it's the only red binder I have so it's easy to find.

I've never added pictures before so I'm not sure if they've been included properly... If I need to redo that I can.

Hi Inge, it seems several certifiers are having trouble seeing the pictures in your BB post.

Looking into it a bit further, it looks like the pictures are hosted on a website different than permies? I'm told  that's likely the trouble.

If you could, would you please re-post the pictures, as "attachments" to your post? That way, the pictures are loaded onto the permies server. Then they can be seen by all permies.

Thank you

Hi Ash, I think the problem is the changes facebook has made lately. I post my photos from my facebook account, I always did that and they were visible here. But it seems in the new version of facebook photos are 'only for friends' until you change that. So first I'll try to make that change. If then they are still invisible for you, I'll have to find a different way.

Ash, here I am again ... I read all I could find here on posting photos on Permies. Found out about the 'attachment' photos and about having a personal thread (in the secret part of the forum ...). So now I started with my own personal thread. It will take a while, but I'll upload the needed photos there. And then from there to the threads ...
Much better than facebook!

Thank you, Inge. My understanding is posting the pictures to permies (personal thread not required, but helps in formatting) is the best choice available for posting not only PEP pics, but others, as well.

Yes, thanks Ash for mentioning that.  Inge, for some reason (likely Facebook related), I can't see your pictures unless I click lots of buttons.  Most everyone else's pictures show right up.  So that's why it's best to upload them or host them on Permies like Ash said.  Thanks for understanding and I can't wait to see all your BB pictures

Hi. I edited my post, replaced the photos. Now they must be visible for everyone.
Exit facebook ...
