Here's the simple mallet I carved today. I followed the "Carve a Simple Mallet With Only an Axe!" video tutorial. I brought out my hand saw but after a bit of time I decided to opt out of using it.

Here's a photo of the wood and the tools I would use to make the mallet.

Here's the finished mallet held in my hand. Definitely fits well.



Here's the finished mallet with the axe. I used the axe almost exclusively as the saw seemed too slow to work with for the task. This was my first-ever authentic "hatchet job" beyond splitting wood or lopping branches, and I think I did all right.

I'd say that this is skating close to the edge for the requirement that you can't get a splinter from the handle.  I'd love to see a bit smoother handle in the future.

I have no woodworking or bush-crafting experience, though I do spend a lot of time vicariously crafting through youtube.

The biggest obstacle was actually identifying/learning about local fauna and wood while alive and as discarded cutoffs (seems like a missing BB category). I'm 80% sure I've used Alder wood. Hard to work with, dramatic color changes and potentially decays fast, learning experience indeed.

The whole project took an afternoon.

Here is my submission for the club style mallet.  I like the type with a taper from the handle width to the head width, so I went for one of those.  Most of material was removed with a hatchet, then I finished the handle shape with a draw knife on Mike Haasl's excellent shave horse. Finally it was sanded to prevent splinters.

Side note: These things work great with a kindling cracker. When the firewood is too far down in the cracker guard, the club mallet can be used on end to pound it through.

I made a mallet for the first time. Note for the future: choose a harder wood. I am afraid this one will not last very long. But over all I am pleased with it.

I made my club style mallet out of a limb of a linden tree from a job site.  It was bit unorthodox to ask the painters to trim the trees, but we did and I salvaged a few of the bigger clearer limbs.  It is a bit short, around 13-14 inches, I believe, but I find this is comfortable and will serve me better than a larger mallet would at this time.  It started at 4 inches around, but peeled it is a bit smaller.  If I find I need a larger mallet in the future I now know how to quickly produce one!

My son saw me making this and became intrigued, so I got him fixed up to make his own "beater."
