This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Plumbing.

In this Badge Bit, you will put collected water through a Berkey filter.  (Note that this BB is part of a 6-part choose your own adventure list BB called the Tiny List. You must complete six Badge Bits in the Tiny List.)

I’ve been using a Berkey for the last 1.5 years since I heard Jack Spirko talking about them, and refill ours every ~2 days... does that count? We switched from using an RO system for about 5 years, but all our drinking water and cooking water goes through the Berkey first. Can send pics of that right now, at work...

What is your water source?  A creek?   Roof?

I updated the BB requirements a teeny tiny bit - to show getting the water from a dodgy water source.  And that water going in.    Maybe you can get some pics like that?

you say "tin pot dictator" like it is a bad thing!

A stream runs through the property. I collected  the water, walked to the house, poured it into the Berkey and waited.  Then clean pure drinking water.

I brought my Berkey water filter with me to Wheaton Labs. Here are pictures of me harvesting water and putting it through the Berkey.

I set up a rudimentary water catchment system at the red cabin:

Would using a Dalton filter be acceptable for this badge bit?  What about a Sawyer filter?

Does this need to be Berkey brand, or any Berkey-type will satisfy?  I'm using a ProOne because I needed the fluoride filtration.  Same basic design; here's one comparison.

I saved water in a pot from snow/melt falling off the roof of my shed. I put it through my friend's Berkey. Tastes like wet dog.  I would not drink rainwater using this method on an on-going basis.

Hey PEP-folks,

The most challenging part of this BB was finding a clean bucket and a clear spot in the icy creek. To gather the collected water, I walked down to our seasonal stream/pond system, which stores a decent quantity of water (guesstimate of 45k gallons in the lower pond, which is full after rain/snow). We have been Berkey users for a decade or more, and have pretty high confidence in them. The second challenge of this BB is waiting... I probably need to scrub the cartridges, and we do have the F/As afterfilters on (a relic of AZ where we did have moderate As levels from very deep water). I probably ought to do a mineral assay of our water up here in the PNW, but have not yet. Anyhow, water was gathered, filtered, and consumed.

Today it was warm enough to get some snow melt off the roof. I was collecting drips from the gutter since the gutters are still full of ice.
