I made rags today with a pair of t-shirts I picked up from a local thrift store.

Here are the finished rags, and scissors to note scale.

Thanks for reviewing, volunteers!

I cut up a pair of old corduroy trousers (pants!) that had worn down to the webbing and eventually split when I lifted a large log the other day. I made a pile of rags from the corduroy, a pair of softer rags from the pockets, saved the button and composted any waste (zipper excluded) as they are 100% cotton.

I usually save our worn cotton t-shirts for rag rugs, but this dingy-white would be better put to use for cleaning then crocheting.

I'm working through making some of my husband's old undershirts into rags and t-shirt yarn. Here is my method:

1. Cut off the main tube of cloth from armpit to armpit. That part can most easily be made into t-shirt yarn. There are ways to use the rest of the t-shirt for yarn, but I'd rather make that part into rags.
2. Cut off the sleeves along the seam. Cut along the seam on the bottom of each sleeve then cut across the top.
3. Cut along the seam at the top of the shirt. Then, cut each of the shirt tops pieces in half.

I cut off the bottom hem and will use it for tying up vines in the garden. You can see in some of the pictures that I accidentally cut all the way through one of the loops, so I'll also use that bit in the garden. To avoid going too off-topic here is a tutorial that roughly matches my method for making the yarn: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-make-t-shirt-yarn-2117355

The final product is 8 cotton rags, some garden ties, and a ball of t-shirt yarn.

This PJ shirt has served me well for two years and has definitely earned retirement, but I am giving it a new job.
This Medium sized shirt made 14 large rags, with a few small scraps.

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must provide:
  - a before picture of the old clothing
  - an after picture of the rags made from the old clothing

I harvested the buttons from this old shirt to start my button jar, so figured I may as well finish using this old favorite and make some rags too!

My boys out-grew this bathrobe. I will cut it into rectangles and surge the edges to make wash cloths!
