What do you all think? Does the attached photo work for Make a calendula blossom tincture since it works for Make calendula infused oil?

Hi Jori,
Thanks for asking here.  I think this is a great place and better than creating an edge case.

I have certified a lot of BBs and helped make and edit/update BB pages for Natural Medicine and Textiles.
If your question was about infused oils and salves, I would probably suggest you submit and note the issue.

Tinctures don't require an oil so I'd probably suggest getting the required photo.  I might approve if I could see your hand and cutting device in the photo but with the plant only it is too open to interpretation.  I personally don't approve photos of the "plant in the garden" when the BB says "picture of the plant being harvested."   I'd want to see evidence of harvesting happening or having just happened.

You could post to PEP Refinement Ideas suggesting improving consistency between the concoctions.

Thanks for the clarification Opalyn! I will keep this one on my pending list and try to remember to get a better picture this summer.

That's a nice looking spoon, Ashley!

I'm a bit behind on my BBs but I finally got around to washing laundry by hand (feet?) in my bathtub. Stomping around on the clothes was kind of fun.

I keep forgetting to take a photo of me and my client when they come over for the cottage industry BB :(

You can try to put it over the top of a garbage can and beat - just put some weight in the can first.

Question:
Does anyone have advice for struggling with disabilities and financial issues while trying to start this journey?

Because I'm struggling. . .hard. . .and I feel so alone.

The skip book says that an individual shouldn't have to spend more than $100 to get started, but from what I've been dealing with in my attempts to move forward with completing just a few BBs, I've spent almost $200 just on supplies (not including the food for a meal I attempted for a BB, but didn't get because I forgot to take pictures of the clean up) and planning out future BBs is exceptionally expensive in tools alone because I'm starting from scratch & have little to no budget/disposable income.

I thought I could start small and slowly accumulate knowledge and the things I will supposedly need over time, but after the craziness of this past month & the addition of stricter guidelines for some of the  basic/starter BBs, I don't know if the physical pain I endure for what seems like the struggle of trying to meet someone else's standards & "the results," is worth it.
The worst part is I feel very alone in my struggle and don't feel like I have any guidance. I know a lot of people love this forum, but my computer died earlier this month and almost all of my progress/pictures/research died along with it.
Does anyone have any advice? Or maybe lives in North Carolina and wouldn't mind a group meeting for emotional support?

Hi Ari,

I'm sorry to hear that SKIP has become a burden, not a help.

For what it's worth, I think you made a great first step in expressing your frustrations.

I think both SKIP and PEA have been written in a manner that assumes that the person perusing is both of able mind and body. So, I can see how it would be discouraging.

That being said, I would focus on perusing BB's that are part of Nest, Food Prep & Preservation, Textiles, and Oddball. If there is something that you can't do physically, skip it, move on to the next on the list. If there is something involved that requires special equipment, skip it, maybe come back later or in the meantime see if you can borrow the equipment. For example, in Nest, there is a BB for sweeping the floor. I usually like to direct people to this one, as most people need to sweep the floor anyway. Or in Food Prep, make soup, as you can at least make a meal for yourself at the same time.

In regards to stricter BB requirements, it was not to increase the difficulty of the BB, but to make the requirements clear so it's easier for volunteers to certify. It will often take hours of staff time to certify one BB that is an edge case. Going forward, if more people are doing SKIP, we won't be able to keep up with BB certification, while running a free program, if it takes up that much volunteer time.

I hope I was able to help in some small way. I hope that there is someone in your community that might be able to provide in person assistance.

Hi Ari,
I don't know your particular obstacles, but I do have my own financial and physical hurdles. There are plenty of BBs that I *could* do, but I always ask myself if it's worth it. Is it something that I actually want to learn? Will it be helpful down the road? Will the supplies have multiple uses beyond the BB? Then, are there other places to get supplies? Neighbors or acquaintances to borrow from, a local lending library? Local Facebook groups and pages have been helpful.

Have you looked at PEA instead of PEP? It seems to require less of the big supplies.
Paul stresses that PEP is suitable for his land and encourages others to create their own journey that fits their area. I'm doing the BBs that make sense to me and have started a "PEX According to Nikki" to fill in the other things.

I hope you find good encouragement on these boards! Losing the data and photos would frustrate me, too.

What's up next on everyone's BB to-do list? Do you have a system or a plan for which ones to do next?

I have a bunch of BBs, but no badges yet, so I'm focusing on ones I'm pretty close to getting - Nest, Textiles, Commerce, Oddball. I've been stuck on some of these because of the pandemic (cottage industry in-person stuff paused), or I need to wait for a certain time of year because some require certain harvested materials and outdoor time. Looking forward to spring and getting to knock some of these off!

I have always used a spreadsheet (first excel, now Google sheet PEP calculator and excel for different things). When I want to hone in on a badge, I would put the outstanding BBs on a post-it for quick reference. Now I tend to focus on one badge at a time, while perusing the lists of what’s next for me.

I’m currently working on the Natural Medicine Straw Badge and have five BBs left so I use a column in the spreadsheet to number and sort what I’m working on for easy reference.

I’ve started on Quinn List Projects and submitted four this month.

That sounds amazing Opalyn!

I wasn't able to get in a BB last week because I was studying for an exam. However, my husband was making up for me as he is now BB10 certified in 1 week! He wants to come to the BB20 event, so now he's crushing out BBs and is totally hooked on SKIP!

Tomorrow I will go over to my sisters property to cut down a live tree with a chainsaw and a bow saw. She has 5 acres so I'm able to cut down a live tree without breaking the law

Now my exam is over I really want to get my BBs done so I can be PEP1 certified after the BB20 event!

Congratulations and no need to apologize.  I'm thrilled about your progress and have some to report too.

I just submitted my 10th Quinn BB.  Once that is approved, I'll apply for my Straw Natural Medicine Badge.

That' so exciting Opalyn! Way to go! I've loved seeing your natural medicine BB submissions.

Sadly, It's unlikely that I'll be PEP1 certified by the end of the BB20 event. I just have to much on my plate right now. But I will be very close!

I’ll share what worked for me in case it helps.  First, I did what was easy at home. Then I focused on Textiles and made a list of what was easier or more feasible at WL ( I do have a forest but no rocket stoves) and just kept at it. I’d be happy to help/sort over zoom or when we get to WL. I’ll be driving . You?

Now I need to follow my own advise and create my priority list for BB20.

Thanks Opalyn!

I have a good list planned, just timelines aren't working. I need to make twine for my textiles BB but there is no stinging nettle up yet. I'm struggling to get the residual income BB, I'm waiting for my willow to arrive to weave a basket..ect

I'm super close with a lot of badges, that's the problem. I hit a snag on the last one and try and get another. I also have a huge work load right now and I'd rather not burn myself out trying to do BBs too quickly.

My pattern seems to be one BB a month instead of one a week right now. Just in the nick of time before the month ends, I infused vinegar with rosemary. I want scented vinegar to clean the floors, but my husband and I haven't agreed on a scent so far. We'll see what he thinks of rosemary.

Hello again SKIP Club! I fell off the wagon a few months back. I've been doing a few Badge Bit - related things, but have been taking photos only and not posting them as life's been a bit crazy on multiple fronts. It's winter here now (though it doesn't feel like it), and I will hopefully have a bit of a break which will allow me to regroup.

Another update on my twig constructions: my lovely bean pole was flattened by a cyclone (!!!), but produced quite a crop of beans prior to that. The garden did quite well overall last summer, with a big harvest of dry beans, pumpkins, flax/flaxseed, and tonnes of jalapenos! I've been taking photos of all the things I've been harvesting (though that 100,000 calorie BB is probably still miles away, but haven't actually done the maths yet)

Starting to try to sift through the pictures I've taken and get some BBs submitted. This lot should get me from where I left off through to March, haha:

I would still like clarification about mixing pep and pea and whether harvesting dandelion and plantain volunteers from my lawn is also pea not pep since that is a "cultivated space".

and for those also curios about the volunteers the person that certified this said they'd count as "wild" so be PEP not PEA.

Who's still plodding along and completing BBs? I was hoping to reach BB60 by the end of the year, but I think finishing 40 is a more realistic goal for me. I recently cleaned my freezer's interior for a Nest BB, cooked a soup for a Food BB, and have been working on PEX-Nikki.

I looked at the lists again recently for the first time in a while... I've done some of the BBs, but didn't record them.

I might do some nest things in the coming weeks. Let's get this thread alive again!

Working on Clean a Bathroom badge bit today. - https://permies.com/wiki/108791/pep-nest/Clean-Bathroom-PEP-BB-nest

Japanese toilets are not paired with the bath and shower, so it's two rooms for me. Toilet room is finished, but the kids woke up so now it's time to take a break.

We clean up the obvious places regularly... so when I go to the trouble of taking before after pictures I find myself cleaning the corners and gross undersides of things. Looks like this will turn into 2-3 badges... maybe 4-5.

It's also going to take a few more days to finish.

I cleaned the outlet hose of our washing machine, and decalcified the sink faucet, and began deep cleaning the washing machine... so still not finished everything.

I've yet to clean the bath tub and the mirrors to my satisfaction.

Anyone have good tips on cleaning mirrors with lots of streak marks/calcification?

Nikki Roche - I'm still doing badge bits! Going a bit slower than once/week. I've been enjoying your PEX posts--good effort.

Good going, Lew, and thanks for the reminder.

Here's what I've been up to since my last post here (3 July -- now 27 Aug):

It's been wet! We got 150% of our usual monthly rainfall in July, so there was little to do out in the garden. I've focused on doing indoor crafts. First, I mended a hole in a pair of shorts. Actually three pairs (why do they all fail at once?). There is still a pair in the mending box, but I now have enough pairs so I'm not walking around indecent! I posted a BB of the rose hips I foraged and dried in the autumn. I then started a long-term weaving project--to do this made up some tablet cards for tablet weaving (so I could start a strap on the warp-weighted loom). Then I went back to my mending and darned a sock. As before, there were many additional socks that I darned (4?), but the badge bit only counts once, unfortunately! Then I sewed up some more underwear, as a pair I had wore out. I've a bunch more sewing and mending projects to do--it never is done!

My current strategy for doing Badge Bits is to only do them as they come up, which works alright, though it's a bit slow.

Make a small loom while wearing the repaired shorts, haha

Finished two of the BB posts.

Nest - Clean a bathroom

Nest - Clean a faucet aerator

The latter is quite satisfying, I recommend it if you haven't cleaned your faucet in a while. There's another BB for a showerhead that works pretty much the same way.

Hi Ashley, after reading the book and perusing permies the best I can find about pursuing SKIP if you're married is that it's a single/individual pursuit (paraphrase from the book: "a friend can't help unless offering a hand to help lift something heavy"). My husband and I already do a ton of the badge  skills so is it worth each of us documenting our individual work or does it not matter for the intent of skip, one of us should primarily focus on it. I infer that your husband is motivated to attend a Wheaton event but I don't think that would be an option/incentive for us since someone needs to stay behind with the kids. I wonder if I'm not considering something here. Thanks for your insight! I'm excited to finally be joining you on your 1BB/wk challenge!
