"Rocket stoves are not actually all that clean.

It already has a name, it is called the Walker Stove. If you want a better version just get plans from Matt Walker at Walker Stoves.

So leave the Rocket Mass heater where it is, an older technology that was a stage on the way to clean burning.

Dr TLUD has on his site about Rockets Stoves in regard to cooking. He is the one saying they are not really clean." [/b]

Perhaps this may be helpful or not....

If one is making claims like this, show me the numbers, or I'm going to ignore you. Peter has consistently shown the numbers. I installed thermocouples in my stove so I could see the numbers.

This is the age of science.  Show the numbers. No excuses.

So, yes, there are the numbers but they are on the quoted site. https://www.drtlud.com/introduction/  For my money Don Ritter is comparing apples with oranges.  The Top-loading Updraft (TLUD) cooker is just that.  It is a fairly complicated (to my mind) cooking system with a carboniferous residue. The RMH is primarily a space heater with adapted smart functions such as cooking and has a residue of some carbon but mainly minerals left from the plant metabolism. the TLUD is metal and has to be manufactured by someone who has the skill/ tools.  The RMH can be made by anyone out of anything ground/ earth based with the addition or otherwise of a metal flue system.

Don Ritter has shared a third person narrative which is "a story" and therefore not necessarily fact.  Solomon has chosen because there are no numbers (which there never usually are in a narrative) to ignore the post unless the numbers are produced. I went to the site and my take is that apples and oranges cannot be compared and both have their place in our world.

So even if you burn the twigs that fall from the trees in your yard or amazon boxes, you could, from a certain perspective, call it a zero carbon heater.

I don't know about "zero", but it is "short cycle" carbon use. Fossil fuels are long cycle taking many lifetimes to go from plant life to fuel. Burning twigs take a blink of a lifetime because they will regrow in a season. Grow the right plants, and they have the ability to take over in a season! Ever seen Himalayan Blackberry grow on the Pacific Wet Coast? It's too prickly for me to want to use it in a RMH, but my Kiwi vine would be a pretty good contender - firewood and fruit on one vine.

Fossil fuels are no longer being produced. At some point fungi figured out how to eat wood and other plant matter, and it stopped accumulating into fossil fuel. And that accumulated plant matter took eons to become fossil fuels.  They truly are non-renewable.

Providence Hearth.

Providence.

The care, guardianship, and control exercised by a deity; divine direction. ... The definition of providence is preparations for the future, frugal management, or divine power. Homesteaders saving food in cans for the winter is an example of providence. Managing a large family on a small budget is an example of providence.

Hearth

the floor of a fireplace.
"the crackling blaze on the hearth"
the area in front of a fireplace.
"they were sitting around the hearth"

Yeah, Ok.  It's kind of hokey.

Rocket Mass Heater... why would you need a new name as it is what it is? Anyone confusing what it isn't needs to be walked away from, left in isolation to wallow in their world, they're not worth the time if they don't take the time.

Jordan Holland wrote:Maximum Efficiency/Minimum Polution Wood Heater.

"Maximum efficiency" gets people's attention, as well as "minimum pollution". It needs the word "wood" to specify the fuel used. I would avoid words like "stove" or "burner" due to a connotation of being unsafe, especially if trying to get accepted by insurance companies. I think "Emm.Eee.Emm.Pee" has kind of an authoritative ring to it, maybe even a military down-to-business attitude, while "maximum efficiency/minimum pollution" sounds like an appliance you would find in a home improvement store.

This is probably the best name so far. How about Maximum Efficiency Radiant Wood Heater? All-day, All the Way Wood Heater?

I've mulled this over and over again, and I think the best route is to go stealth.

Improved Masonry Heater.

That is all.

For cooking yep. Otherwise, it's a mass heater.

Guess what insurance companies like? A rocket whatever?  that they have never heard of !  Or a plain old mass heater?

For insurance purposes MASONRY MASS HEATER it is. Even than without a UL Rating its questionable in their minds and rightfully so.

Have not been on in a while, and stumbled onto this post....

My opinion on re-naming of the RMH ?  Leave it the way it is.

There has been far too much rebranding, renaming and basicly trying too erase history just to satisfy the short sighted, narrow minded blind idealists who think that if they don't like something, they can make it go away.

Rocket Mass Heater - i have built 2.  They sound like a rocket when you get em going good, and they do a beautiful job of heating a large mass.

The name says it all.  If someone has a problem with it, tell em to do some research.

But then, that is just my opinion.  Delete if it does not "fit in". 😁

I find myself calling a rocket mass heater an efficient masonry heater when discussing it with laymen. They tend to stick around longer and actually listen to me explain the burn tunnel and heat riser. Just my two cents.

My first response to this thread was a huge eye roll. It's hard enough to talk about something revolutionary without the name changing. Second thought was hey, why not use this as an excuse to talk about what it actually does--heats my house cleanly with local wood scraps for about $3000 cheaper per year less than my propane furnace did. Good fun. Who's coming to the Rocket Heater Jamboree in October? We can talk about it more there. https://wheaton-labs.com/rocket-mass-heater-jamboree/?f=51

I just prompted an AI model with the following:

"Come up with an alternative name for a Rocket Mass Heater that would be pleasing to regulators".

The response was: "Clean Combustion Thermal Furnace" or "CCT Furnace"

pretty good but I asked for a few more...

  • "Efficient Biomass Thermal System" (EBTS)
  • "Sustainable Heat Generation Appliance" (SHGA)
  • "Eco-Fire Rocket Heater" (EFRH)
  • "Green Combustion Heating System" (GCHS)
  • "Regenerative Energy Furnace" (REF)
  • "Low-Emissions Rocket Heater" (LERH)
  • "Environmental Rocket Furnace" (ERF)
  • "Renewable Fuel Heating Appliance" (RFHA)
  • "Clean Energy Rocket Stove" (CERS)
  • "Efficient Rocket Hearth" (ERH)

  • Hopefully, that redeems my awful suggestions from 2 years ago.

That will get peoples attention,as they might be imaging how a rocket could be used to safely warm ones  backside on a cold winter night.

Since you bumped this thread and no new name has been accepted, why not try

    Eco-friendly  heater.

Eco-friendly thermal mass waste consuming heater.

    Sustainable low emission  heater.

Whole home eco friendly waste product heating system.

Never say burn, fire, stove, high, wood or hot when talking about wood stoves.

I was going to try some AI queries, but decided to let the real-world human experts have a go.

The auto industry marketing team did some focus studies and suggested:
    -Banshee Edsel Nova Heater

The sports team owners simply leased the naming rights to the highest corporate bidder and got:
    -Coors Pepsi Verizon Heater

The burned-out '60s rockers stared vacantly into space for an hour and mumbled:
    -Strawberry Alarm Clock Heater

The pharmaceutical executives consulted the List of Syllable Combinations Not Yet Trademarked and settled on:
    -Rejuvulon Avisequem Biolania Heater

    Grundofen

German Grundofen translates as "Ground Oven".
    "Grund" can also mean "Reason".
Like in English we say "On what grounds is this a great alternative name for an RMH?!"
And in Google Translate, it converts to the very boring "Basic oven"

Stovemason.com wrote:Similar to kachelofen, grundofen are European masonry stoves that are generally used for heating, cooking and also sleeping, but instead of stove tiles, other types of refractory materials with excellent thermal properties are used for stove facing - firebrick slabs, high density blocks, similar to magnesite bricks, specialized ceramics or cob.

Example of a Grundofen from Scotland (link)

Example of a Grundofen from a German company, Niermann Ofenbau GmbH...

Keeping in mind Satamax's request that we keep it simple, how about "Butt Warmer." The heated bench is the butt warmer. A rocket oven would be a "Bun Warmer." This might not change the technical name of an RMH. But it would be the thing to emphasize when marketing the idea.

Nancy, are you saying that you've found a way to fuel your RMH with flatulence as well as twigs?!.....  Hmmm.... RMH = Righteous methane heater...?    Maybe add some vapor check-valves on the bench to allow one-way transfer of 'bum-fuel' to turbocharge the combustion.... Ha!

I digress from the name change:  Cozy Cob Heater
                                                              Radiant Matrix Heater
                                                               Fuel-it n' Forget-it Furnace

I said, at the start of the thread.

These are widely known as rocket mass heaters or rocket stoves.

This is a name known by many. And albeit in the public domain. It carries the legacy of Ianto Evans.

Finding a better name, might be a good idea on paper. But would fudge the search results on search engines for a while too.

To me, it's like when the french tried to go base ten for everything. Base ten clocks, hours and minutes, base ten months, ten day weeks etc. It never worked.

    Hence the

The "rocket" word got ingrained into people's minds and I meet complete laymen who heard this word or saw some video. It's a brand name and should be nurtured and respected.
What has to be changed is the image of the rocket stove, so populace will not associate it with ugly and rather unacceptable oil barrels but rather with convenient batchbox encased in an elegant masonry skin. Functionalism is not enough, people want aesthetics and beauty.
Like Lamborghini - originally (and still) building tractors and farm equipment, but became famous for sports cars.

Maybe Rocket Masonry Heater would be good? Or Rocket Masonry Stove?

Like you, I've noticed a lot of random people know what a rocket stove is. They're sold in camping stores, and people make them from logs and bricks. There's tiktoks and facebook reels about them, and butt-loads of youtube videos. They're relatively mainstream. And "masonry stoves" are a thing, and the word "masonry" says "bricks" even to people who don't know what a masonry stove is.

    Rocket Masonry Stove says:

    (A) Rocket: This think burns efficiently and hot like a rocket
    (B) Masonry: It's fancy. Masonry is fancy. Masonry is quality. It'll probably be built with bricks or stone. It sounds Old World and quality.
    (C) Stove: It's used for heating your house, like a woodstove. People know what woodstoves are. I think Rocket Masonry Stoves should have a cooktop, while Rocket Masonry Heaters probably wouldn't have a stovetop--they'd just be used for heating.
