This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Animal Care.

In this Badge Bit you will be putting out some winter straw to help the animals stay warm.

This bb needs some love. Some of the videos show wood chips- so if we define "straw" as non nutritional cellulose strips that the animals can use for bedding and insulation.
Ta-da! I get these paper shreds for the low price of not throwing them in the garbage from my job which requires Personal Protected Information (ppi) be shredded to prevent identity theft.

Edge case submission
Damn repost sorry. On the left you can see where the bunnies can choose to be on the upper or lower floor so both have access to the hay. But that is all I had so I used it all in the upper cubby since the lower one often becomes a bathroom and I wanted it to be a decent amount of insulation.

Prepping a 2-level rabbit hutch for winter with dry straw.

During the warmer months,  the lower level is opened up with just a hardware cloth cover for air/ ventilation.   The bottom is lined with flat slate pieces as a cool resting surface.  

My doe that is housed in this hutch is nicely litter trained, so the upper level holds a pan of shavings for her to use,  that keeps the bottom level clean and dry (my buck unfortunately is NOT clean and can't use a system like this if I want it to stay dry).  

Before winter,  the lower level gets stuffed with dry clean straw (as much as I can fit in) and then the front panel is covered with a solid wood insert and then the hardware cloth is put back over that to secure it.

I can add dry straw through the hatch door in the upper level to top off as needed;  some of it does get nibbled and broken down.

My laying hens have roosts, but they will need insulation from the ground when it gets cold. I laid out a good four inches of old hay for them.

I am worried about my mama bunnies kindling in this cold snap! I will try giving them fresh straw and see how that helps.  They live in a colony, and deliver babies underground, so hopefully the mamas pull some into their burrows.

Here is my submission for this Badge bit. It is warm today, good motivation to work outside before the big frost of february. I put 1 bale of new straw for the chicken so they be warmer when they are inside. They are Chantecler, a local breed more resistant to frost. They sleep in the mini-bus in security and can take a stroll in winter in the solarium and are free on the lot in summer.

I think we need a BB for dealing with mud and livestock because I thought I was making a video for it and turns out, there is no BB for mud! So I have the video, but.......

It is supposed to be very cold tonight so I added some straw to the chicken coop. I added a bucket of straw to the nesting boxes first because sometimes they sleep in there. Then I added a bucket of straw to the coop area under the ladder.

On Thanksgiving it was cold outside but still clear, but then that night it snowed quite a bit. I wanted to make sure my rabbit stays warm through the winter, so I filled a cardboard box full of hay to keep him warm.

Real snow finally started to fly for the first time this year.

Edge case submission
I posted an entire thread that may fulfill this BB.  I don't have a picture of me adding straw, because I have to take the pictures myself and I didn't really have a way to do that, but the thread shows the structure I built, the straw bales I added for insulation, and my dog laying in the shelter on the straw bales that I tore apart to line the floor with, so maybe I have enough pictures?
