This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in textiles.

In this project, you will knit or crochet a hat. This can be simple or complex, but it cannot be knit on needles larger than US size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles or K hook (6.5mm).

Badge bit requirements:
- hat must fit the wearers head--not too tight or extremely loose
- hat must be knit on no larger than US size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles or K hook (6.5mm)
- as with all Textile Badge Bits, it needs to be made out of 100% natural materials (wool, silk, cotton, linen, alpaca, etc)

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
- materials for making your hat
- your hat in progress, with your needles/hook visible
- your hat finished, on a head

I hope this will do for this BB.
I knitted several hats. Some of which for Boots (BRK, when they post 100 posts on Permies with photos in it). But I didn't think of making the right photos for a BB.

One hat finished, a second one started. Using a circular needle for those hats.

This time it must be good for the BB. One hat (or beanie) from start to finish.

First few rows knitted. Natural white hand spun wool on circular needle.

Until the last row of the rim (or is it 'rib'? It's 2 knit 2 purl)

The knitted part without decreasing is ready. Patterns in plant dyed wool, leftovers.

The part with the decreasing on four double pointed needles. Almost finished

Finished! This hat is a BRK gift for a boot who did 100 posts with photos in his thread on Permies. Now I'll send it all the way to Missoula.
It isn't the first knitted hat I sent to Wheaton Labs, but it is the first time I made all needed photos of the knitting process.

Wanted to learn a new stitch, so I crocheted this hat for myself. "Apache Tears" mosaic crochet stitch. Very fun! Not hard at all.

Here is my submission for the Textile - Straw - Knit a Pair of Fingerless Gloves BB.

I started this hat with the yarn I harvested for Unravel Old Sweater BB and the Jayne Cobb hat pattern. As the project progressed, I added the white stripes and the hat was plenty long so I skipped the ear flaps, hence it is posted here instead.
The hat was knit on size 10 or 10.5 needles and made from cotton yarn. I love the look of the "messy" pom pom!

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
- your hat in progress, with your needles/hook visible
+ Pom Pom Making
- your hat finished, on a head

Hello! I am making this hat for my son's birthday. We have roughly the same size head, we often share hats.

I using a 6.5mm crochet hook, working the hat bottom up.

Yarn is Charisma in color " Northern Lights"

Not sure if this can be submitted yet as I haven't finished with the Textiles Sand badge...but sticking it here anyway so I don't forget down the track!

My main stickwork is crochet (I've knitted a couple of things in the past, but it definitely doesn't flow as easy for me!), but I really like the look of knitted clothes better...so I did my best at trying to mimic it! Usually I would crochet a hat in the round, but this one was made a bit differently in that it's crocheted flat, then turned into a tube, then closed in at the top. I did have a pattern to begin with, but quickly veered off as I wanted the rim to fold over nicely, and didn't want to put a pom pom on the top so couldn't just gather it together without thought. I made the hat for my camera-shy husband, so I've modelled it in the photo, but I'm not sure he's taken it off much since making it for him, so I'd say it's a win!

Yes! You can get certified for Straw badges, even if you haven't finished Sand level yet.

And, they count toward your BB5, BB10, BB20, etc, certification, too!

I knitted this hat a few years ago. I wasn't sure if that was kosher for BBs, but I've seen a few submissions across the discipline that were from the participant's past, so I think it is. I used an overspun singles that I made from an art-batt and size four circular needles:

It's mostly a blend of wools, but you can see some of the crazy stuff that got put in by the batt-maker:

I didn't make it for any specific person and it turned out a little tight for my giant noggin, but was a loose fit on my teenage daughter:

Nice combo of pattern and yarns! I am wondering if you could add a lining to it. A thin layer of knit fabric will both make it fit more snugly and add a lot of insulation.

There are another couple reasons that’s not a bad idea, actually. 1) The wrong side of entrelac is pretty ugly. 2) These art yarns often have scratchy bits of stuff and so wearing it can be itchy if you don’t have a lot of hair.

I’ve never done that, but I could use a nice fingering, pick up stitches half an inch up on the inside and try to knit a second hat of the same size. Maybe I’ll look up some lined hat patterns and see what they do.

I think this is allowed. To me this is a kind of knitting technique. It depends on the size of the pegs in the peg-loom and that of the hook, because it's said: 'it cannot be knit on needles larger than US size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles or K hook (6.5mm)'

I knitted this hat using 100% wool on a 6mm circular needle for my partner. My 'in progress' picture is quite near the end as I was sizing it on him as I went - you can still see the needles so I hope that's ok! I told my lovely model I wouldn't post any pictures of him online which is why I blurred his face. :)

My Oddball BB got rejected, though I specified that I used acrylic yarn and therefore it wasn't fit for any textile BB. Should I submit here, or is this just not applicable towards any BB? You can see my previous submission here.

Hi. If you knit a new hat, using all natural materials, you can get the BB. Using acrylics does not fit Pauls ideas, so you can not get a BB for it.

Decided to try out some new stitches and a top-down hat. I wanted a little kitty-ear hat, so I picked up some wool yarn for this BB. The body is in a mini berry stitch (or I've seen it called boblette stitch) and the ribbing is a third-loop hdc.

I keep looking for natural yarn at the secondhand shop but I have yet to score any. I hope I can try making some of these nifty hats soon! Maybe I should check Craigslist & OfferUp too but they tend to be much more expensive than the local secondhand shop.

I understand your problem. Here at the second hand stores it's also very difficult to find 100% natural fibres (including knitted clothes to unravel). Maybe 100% cotton is easier to find than wool. But most of the time it's a blend with some (or more) synthetics in it, or 100 % acrylics :-(

Thank you for the invite Samantha! Unfortunately, I have had to return to a life of being Ferd to pay for some biological dentistry I needed/wanted to get done.

I saw bags of raw unwashed wool available in my area for a good price, I would’ve loved to be there learning with you all.

I hate the Ferd life but biological dentistry is quite pricey. Once it’s complete, I hope to return to Gerthood.

Most of the unraveling I did without making photos, but here I have a few:

Unraveling black cotton (100%)

Unraveling blend 20% angora, 70% lambswool 10% nylon

Unraveling a wool-mohair blend (no label, maybe there's nylon in it too)

I’m combining the Magic Circle and this Crochet Beanie pattern to make a double layered Beanie for my son.
The yarn is 100% Cotton in color Chocolate Milk Ombre. He likes it!

The Beanie pattern I doubled.

I finished crocheting a beanie today! I guess I've been obsessed with crocheting lately because it's been so cold! I used 100% cotton yarn and an I size hook (5.5 mm).

I have the softest cotton yarn in a lovely neutral color and decided it must become a hat! I used one of videos linked here and was very happy with the results.

This is a pretty basic crocheted hat. I basically made a rectangle with a single crochet stitch and then joined the short ends together before pulling one side completely closed to create the top of the hat.
100% cotton yarn that I found at a thrift store and a 5mm hook.

Does this tiny ad smell okay to you?
