Dimensional lumber woodworking
instruction, regulation, insurance, safety, etc

Projects involve dimensional lumber, either from a sawmill or purchased.  Projects include construction, cabinetry and fine woodworking.  We are emphasizing good wood working skills, honoring the beauty of wood and balancing the longevity of the project against the use of icky chemicals.

Power tools, nails, screws are used, but hopefully less than in most construction.   A little more emphasis on good joinery.  Much less glue than most construction these days, hide glue is encouraged.

No waferboard or particle board.  Plywood is permitted for a few specific BBs.

Wood protecting finishes are encouraged like shellac flakes, milk paint, beeswax, oils that won't turn rancid (eg: tung, linseed, jojoba), etc.   Commercially produced finishes are only permitted for a few specific BBs.

Hello!  Nice, thanks for access.

I've built two workbenches in 10 years, from scraps, hence the non-standard dimensions.

This will give you an idea of how a nonskilled guy does carpentry.  I've Googled and Youtubed today, I see things about tenons, lap joints, pocket holes & screws & jigs ... I know nothing about that.  All I did was join wood together with deck screws.  I did know to use support boards around the legs, I just found out today, they're called *stretchers*.  I knew to use them, didn't know they had a name.

This is a good starting point, for a beginner.  That's what I am.

My job today was to lug this thing to its new home, a proper shop vice just in the basement.  I took photos so you could see how I built it.

Would this be worth 4 points?  Maybe 6 points if tenon/mortises are used?  Even more if lap joints are used?  Your call!

FYI, when I make the badge live in the PEM forum, I'll create it fresh so our posts here won't go permies...

I'd say a beefy workbench is worth about 4 points.  The points are based on "talented newbie" hours with all the parts, pieces and tools ready to go.

I could add a BB for a fine woodworking workbench but I'm a bit worried about exploding this badge into too many things:

Does that mean you have enough dimensional lumber BBs?  If so, I can concentrate on another area that needs BBs.

I'd say I have enough but if you notice a glaring omission, I'd be happy to add it (like the workbench).  Thanks!
