This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

For this BB, you will harvest, dry, and store enough dandelion root to make a tea, infusion or decoction.

It rained all weekend, and I figured soft ground would be a great opportunity to dig some dandelion roots. I used this method of "roasting" dandelion roots dry in an oven from Cedar Mountain Herbs.

Here is my submission for the Natural Medicine Aspect - Harvest, Dry, and Store Dandelion Root BB.

I harvested Dandelion plant and root material at my Mom's church in Copalis Beach, Washington.  I planned to harvest 1-2 plants but kept finding more and the community wanted them gone.  I did verify that they do not use pesticides or herbicides on the property and harvested away from the road and main parking area.  I diced up the root and used 8 ounces for a decoction.  That left 11 ounces for drying in the oven.  I heated it to "keep warm" twice and kept the oven light on to dry the roots - took less than 36 hours.

Wet weight: 11.1 ounces
Dry weight: 2.0 ounces

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following photos:
-  the fresh herb being harvested
-  herbs drying in the oven
-  herbs in a sealed and labeled container, with the label indicating where the herbs came from, the method of drying, and the date

I've been craving dandelion root! Good thing it has been a wet spring and there are so many tender, juicy dandelion plants, ripe for rooting! Here are some plants from my garden. Roots for me, leaves for my rabbits. I washed, cut, and dried the extras for storage.

Gathered dandelions from the hummingbird bed next to the front steps and in the nursery bed. They pulled up easily because the soil isn't compacted.
Cut the roots from the leaves, washed, peeled the largest, then chopped into fine dice.  They air-dried in a mesh bag.

Edge case submission
Hey PEP-folks,

[Re-Edited with specifics about root matter. I think the wires got crossed between this and the "Dandelion leaf tea" BB later on, apologies!]

This is the use for the upper half of the dandelions discussed here: Tincture BB Submission , for the sake of the servers, I did not duplicate photos which apply to both badges (specifically, the dandelion shown in the 55gal planter and the washing of the whole plants). However, if the badge approvers prefer photos be posted in multiple places for completeness within a post, I am happy to add.

I picked through the tops to toss the wilted and brown leaves, and then I spread them on the roof of our chick tractor in full sun, and laid an old window screen over the top, weighted with cinderblock bits. Our daytime highs have been in the mid-90s, there has been no dew for a while, and the humidity is ~15% during the day, so this method works well here and now for me, your mileage will vary. I turned the plants after a day, at which time the stalks were still slightly pliable, but the greens were totally dry. I left them for another day, and then collected, bagged, and labelled them.

Further dandelions were harvested from the front yard, roots and leaves were cleaned, sun+screen-dried, and the roots were put in a labelled glass jar, as shown below.

Note: hello, Mark! This badge is for dandelion roots. So yes, if you have those pictures as well, they would be important. Also, I don't see so on this particular BB, but on many BBs, plastic is frowned upon. Maybe a glass jar or ceramic crock? Your drying method is cool!

I harvested these from my yard, then sun dried them for 8 days on the wire rack in my yard. Though, now that I’m seeing everyone else, I’m thinking maybe I’d’ve been better off cutting them into smaller pieces first…
