I think whittling with a knife would be an option.  It might be easier to flatten the backs before you cut the forks off the parent branch (maybe)...   Or before you debark them so they're less slippery.  Also, splitting the main part of the forked branch in half down its center might be a way to get there quicker.  Use a knife and pound it into the stick with a rock to start splitting it.

 - Flat mounting surface
 - Round off sharp edges
 - Hand tools only

To get certified for this BB, post three pics.  

 - Your chunks of wood that you are starting with
 - Progress about half way through, with the hand tools you have decided to use for this
 - Final product



1) Go to the woods and find some suitable green wood branches. I found a branch of large tulip tree branch that had come down in last months storm and cut two pieces with a small bow saw.



2) Split the branch with hand axe and mallet to create a flat back and then cut to shape with bow saw



3) Remove the bark and smooth of the ends with whittling knife



4) Drill countersunk holes for attaching to the wall



5) Hooks finished and ready for installing when the wood has dried



6) The tools I used

We just had massive snow storm here in Colorado, so there is downed green wood everywhere. I started with a large limb that fell out of my tree. Used my knife to strip the bar, my clippers to trim to proper size, and I hand sanded off the sharp edges and to flatten the back for easier mounting.

This is my BB submission for 2 coat hooks from a small branch crotch.

I used a chunk of serviceberry that was becoming shaded out by some young pine trees.  The wood is quite hard and nice to work with.  For tools I went with a multitool with a pretty good blade and an ok saw on it, as well as a hatchet for the initial chops.
