This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Commerce

Here you will show that you can make money from your home by providing a service or product for people.   Must include a tip of the hat to permaculture values

What is a Cottage Industry?  For purposes of this BB it's where you do the work from your home and it's either a face to face service or making goods for sale.

Some examples:
  - Renting out a cabin, tent site, etc.
  - Sewing repair, truck repair, etc.
  - Massage, counseling, etc.
  - Classes, workshops, etc.
  - Turning lumber into furniture for sale
  - Making clothes

To document your completion, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
   - A description of your work and how it's a cottage industry
   - You doing the work
   - Proof that you got paid $50 or more (you can smudge out the personal info, so long as it is identifiable as you)

Note:  this could be several different activities/sessions that add up to $50 or more.

Here is my submission for the Cottage Industry BB - Commerce Aspect - sand.

At Windward, we have designated 40 acres as our campground.  We have installed permanent outhouses, a shower house, many campsites, a geodesic dome, and an event kitchen with a cooler (cool-Bot technology).
The campground was developed as a private venue for events.  With the cancellation of big events, we decided to register with HipCamp - think AirB&B for camping.  HipCamp does the registration and we connect with the campers before they arrive (with directions and answer any question), upon arrival, and are available to address any question or concerns as well as sharing information on the forest and the cemetery.  In the photo below, I am sharing information on how the Gerry Oaks make nests for the gall wasps as a way to protect itself (the oak) from the larvae with the campers who paid $60 for the rental.

Hi Opalyn, how much of the rental work do you do vs someone else at Windward?  Just trying to verify that you are doing the vast majority of the work, otherwise someone else should be getting the credit.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for asking.  Currently, Walt and I split the work in the campground.  Walt focused on the other group of campers (see the $120 rental fee) and I focused on the pictured group with a $60 rental fee.  

Previously (for about four years and before HipCamp), I managed the campground rentals.  Specifically, each spring, I would be Windward's contracting agent with a group running an event called Beltaine in the Grove.  About a dozen people would come up for 5-6 days to prepare for the 40+ campers that would be here for an additional 5 days.  I would also be the lead contact during their stay and collect campground fees directly.  I would also manage (clean, pump, fix) the outhouses and shower.  But, I don't have a photographic record of those interactions.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2020 AT 2 PM EST – 5 PM EST
Seed Starting Soil - Our Garden Series

"Learn how to make your own seed starter soil, plus other type of soils in this hands-on workshop.
Participants pay a $75 which includes room and board, breakfast, the 2 hour workshop and supply fee may take home a bag of seed starter soil, plus some extra things to help jump-start your spring gardening."

They paid with a check, and I won't copy someones check, so this is a copy of the invoice.

In this workshop we taught this couple how to make their own seed starter soil, and gave them a general tour of the Mavis Farmacy Lab, we planned to do more of these throughout the year, but the virus slowed that down for a bit.

My Partner LJ, and I prepared the lodging, in our home. ( We use to run a B&B out of the home so it was old hat preparing the rooms and breakfast) She normally does the cleaning, and I do the breakfast workshop and entertaining.

Would housecleaning at someone else's house (using only permie-friendly cleaners) count for this?  Or does it need to be from my home?

Hmm, I think that's close to a fit here but I'm not sure since it's in someone else's home.  But it sounds like a perfect fit for the "Do permaculture labor" BB since you're using good cleaners.

I have a similar question to Julie's. I teach at my home and at students' homes (or, I would normally, but you know, pandemic). I have proof of travel teaching, but not in my own home and I probably won't be having students over for a while still. Would this count or should I wait?

Am I scavenger-hunting right?

This BB is "Start a cottage industry from your home" which means it has to be in your home.  So I guess you have to wait till people are coming back onto your property.

Thanks for clarifying. My teaching is not face-to-face at the moment due to COVID. It's also not related to permaculture directly (I'm teaching computer programming) although it might be swingable as "providing others with the means to manufacture".

For some of these examples, how would one prove a tip of the hat to permaculture values? Like massage, counseling, repair?

Massage is pretty aligned with People Care and natural medicine so I think it's an easy go.

Counseling would probably depend on the topic.  Counseling a firm on how to best implement fracking under the only remaining habitat of the golden tailed turtle probably wouldn't jive.  Career counseling, maybe?  

Most repair efforts would be a pretty clear win.  Maybe repairing something intended to harm the environment wouldn't be a fit but most stuff would be good.  Repairing a truck so it works - yup.  Repairing a vacuum cleaner - yup.

The "proof" is just based on your word.

My husband and I built a Tiny House on our property. We rent it out for $600/month (which includes utilities, internet, and fire wood for the tiny stove). It's a cottage industry because it's 20ft from my house and I mostly just do minor repairs and maintenance.



This young fellow is paying us $600 to stay for a month in the Tiny House. This it taken at the entrance of the Tiny House.



Funny Canadian moonies! We get paid in cash for "reasons".

Reading this thread, it strikes me that I am running a cottage industry business - I've always called it a 'micro business' because small didn't seem small enough.

I have been doing pet care and dog walking out of my home for about 6-7 years, with it being my sole source of income for 4. Currently I have 2 dogs who come for 'daycare', ~10 that I walk, and a couple more that I housesit or take in for boarding.

I am car-free so all my walking is done in my local community. I believe that it's both people and animal care, as I have many opportunities to make the dog's and my client's lives more enjoyable (yes, I can help you out with an extra day here, an extra treat there, or if you're having a spectacular time we will stay a little longer at the dog park).

I will attach some pictures of me working (and narrowly avoiding a serious smooching), a photo of my two daycare dogs in my home, along with an e-transfer with my name and the job I'm being paid for on it.. I also have a business Instragram under @bestcoastdogs if there is any doubt of my legitimacy.

My sister and I offer animals grooming from time to time, normally on farm dogs, or outdoor animals that don't get a lot of extra attention. Most of the time, folks just bring there animals over to the farm and we clean them up a bit. I'm mostly the helper, but my sister is teaching me some of the tricks.

In the picture below is us hold, and cutting the bad mats off a farm dog.

This weekend a neighbor brought over his three dogs, I only have picture of one of them, because this was the calmest of the puppies.

We trimmed their nails, trimmed off mats, and a good wellness check, He paid us $102, which we split, so I made 51$.

Hi Justyn, this was escalated to me for a quick check.

Chapter 54, page 169 at the very top is where it's mentioned in the book.

It's not mentioned in the Commerce badge since it applies to all badges.

Let's say you and your sibling start a home business.  One of you comes up with the idea, one does the farcebook stuff, one does the instegram stuff, one arranges things with the customer, one or both do the service, one sets up the paypal thing, one buys supplies, one does the taxes, etc.   If YOU don't do ALL of those things yourself, you didn't prove that you really learned everything it takes to set up that particular home business.

We had to draw the line somewhere about how many things like this are mentioned in every badge or BB.  We didn't want it to look like the first 8 pages of a lawnmower manual with all the warnings that everyone would ignore anyway.

Thank you, for the clarification. I interpreted that part of the 'help' differently, but I do see what you mean by having to draw a line somewhere.  

In my mind, this badge was less about skills and more about showing you could make money. That was how I misinterpret it.

Again, I'm adding this to help improve the nature of the Badge, Skip, Pep program because I love it.

I've been working with a friend-turned-client doing life coaching. I am by no means a trained counsellor or psychologist, and he knows this, but we work together to set goals, make plans to meet them, and find ways to motivate him to follow through on those plans. We have more frequent communication and check-ins online, but about once a month he comes to see me in person for a meeting, so that's the part I'm submitting for this BB.

I offer a private home-boarding service for puppies for my training clients.   Puppies stay at my home.

Indirectly this is a people care service;  when folks have a family emergency or unexpected travelling situation come up, they need a safe trusted place for their young puppies to stay.   This helps relieve some of their stress and lets them focus on the issue at hand without worrying.  

I charge $40/day  (24 hrs) for this service.   Puppies have an enriching social and training experience in a home environment.

Is there a place I could get a BB for sewing some pj's for a client?  I am doing it from my home.  I will earn over $200 for it, but not close to $500.  Is this the correct thread?  Or would I have more success in the oddball thread? It's not sewing repair, I am making them from a pattern.  Thanks!

Hello skippers!!
I am a licensed massage therapist. (For near 17 years now!) I do massages in the She Shed I built on my property a couple years ago. I use creams and oils I made myself from herbs I wildcrafted.
I have over 50 clients (a lot for a small town of 600!) And I do anywhere from 1 to 10 massages a week, depending on how busy my kids are keeping me. Since I charge $70 an hour, a single massage will fulfill this bb. I have gotten up to $2,000 a month before.

I rent out a trailer on my homestead.  I only charge the guy $100/mo plus utilities cuz he helps me around the property and has a cool name.
