Great! I love putting things (including information) right where I am going to need them. I would advise giving the ashes a bit more than a day, though. Embers can last a long time. I usually clean out the stove then leave the ashes in the can until right before the stove needs cleaning again. Maybe 3-4 weeks...

I do too. I usually put them in there, and it takes a while to fill up. And then I forget about it for a while until I need to empty the ash from my woodstove, and then I empty the wood ash container.

Once cool I use them for a number of things.

Here is my submission for the Nest - Sand - Jeeves - Setup a Wood Ash Management System BB.

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following photos:

With several wood stoves in use and only one wood-stove-sized shovel, I decided to make more. When a shovel would get damaged beyond its capacity to dig soil, I would stash it for repair or yard art. So I went to my stash and picked out this shovel which had a crack between the collar for the handle and the blade. I traced our small shovel onto this damaged shovel with welder's chalk, used an angle grinder to cut and shape the shovel then buffed out the rust and gave it a coat of wood stove paint. its like magic :)

Here is my submission for managing my wood ash. So that I can optimise my learning for each BB, I have decided to create a printable reflective journal so that as my knowledge increases, I can add to each BB Journal Page.

Amendment to fix missing element of BB:

Can I get a second opinion on this pleeeeease? The screening and filtering picture is me placing the ashes into the bucket as you may or may not be able to tell from the ashes on the ground (bit of spillage). I was trying to separate the ashes from the charcoal is all.

I think we're a bit confused as to where the ashes come from and where they're stored? Are the ashed from your charcoal grill, or is the grill where you store them, or is the grill where you sift them?

I'm assuming you store them in the metal can you labeled, but your post isn't really clear. Could you give a bit more explanation? Thanks!

Yeah you're right, Nicole. It does seem a little confusing looking back at them. The charcoal grill is the place where I sift the ash to save the larger pieces of charcoal that come from the furnace down in the basement that heats all our water and wall heaters, but otherwise the ashes are stored in the labelled bucket. Sorry for all the confusion...

I have a Cobb which is a multi-fuel cooker, grill, oven, bbq. I burn charcoal and small branches. The bucket is to collect ash after it has been used. Here are my photos.

I imagine there's a good reason for the requirement that the ash collection container be metal, but wracking my brain I can't figure why some kind of ceramic/earthenware/terra cotta urn would not be superior. Is there something I'm missing? Is it simply the higher cost of a large clay vessel vs. galvanized steel? Thank you for any clarification!

Here are my images of my wood ash system. I have several of these metal cans that I fill up over winter. To get far more storage out of them I frequently pack the ash down with the top end of a heavy hammer.

Here's our wood ash bucket ready to hold what remains after running our wood stove.

To be precise, it's also holding metal bits and charcoal, which (as the label states) needs to be sifted through first to separate wood ash and metal bits.
